. >> ashleigh, if you down size the pentagon politically, and that's what the president is going to do, it's not a bad idea the republicans think to have the republican at the helm because they're called soft on defense, et cetera, et cetera. when you're down sizing, have a republican lead the way. >> it makes for easier politics in some respects. let's switch to mr. brennan. this is another interesting choice and a lot of people have a lot of good things to say about john brenna. however, gler yeah, the n nomination process is problematic. the cv sounds terrific. when's the problem? >> i actually think that brennan will have a much easier time than chuck hagel. i think there are questions about how he felt about enhanced interrogation techniques as we call them, otherwise known as torture, during the bush administration. >> he didn't particularly dislike them, right? >> well no. he has come out and said he opposed them but there's also a question of using drones too much. there are a lot of democrats who believe that we've -- we're using drones too much so these questions are going to be

for the top job at the pentagon. the announcement expected to be made in the last couple of days. reports the president has set isled on chuck hagel. why to you think he picked him given the republican opposition and some from the left flank as well? >> the only thing i can think of is that he believes hagel is as a kind of a maverick would not drink the kool-aid as the white house may see it on pentagon military spending and so on. this he would be a counter force over there and not an advocate for the armed forces in the way that even leon panetta has become. the warnings that we are hearing for example about the effect of the sequester so called on the pentagon the dire warnings have come from panetta not from the white house. the president isn't going around warning about that. leon panetta is. i think that is the reason. are other evacuees, i otherwisr course. really not a particularly distinguished record in the senate or anywhere else. i'm not suggesting he didn't fight valiantly when was himself a soldier, i'm not suggesting that. an odd guy. there is this tinge of suspicion about

secretary of defense, did it make a difference in the pentagon? did it make a difference in that setting to have a woman at that high level? >> right. i think it absolutely did in several different ways, number one, she was just a real inspiration for a lot of young women and really encouraged them to go into jobs that were seen as being in male-dominated realms, secondly, she really brought in a terrific crew of women into leadership positions in the pentagon. you know, dramatically increased the number of women in the positions. and when you think about the rolodex, you tend to think of people you know, and men tend to know more men, and women know more women, so getting people in that high-ranking pentagon post, it occurred to her in the way it may not have occurred to men, that i know kathryn hicks, or jenean davis. and then finally, michelle fourneau put a lot of effort into making the policy, the place a family-friendly work place, not just important to women but men, an important issue. to find flexible work arrangements, and even in the pentagon when you deal with classified info

"washington post" reporter and columnist david ignatius, who has covered six american presidents, suggests president obama is a disappointment. here's ignatius. "rather than come to the table with a grand vision of his own, a real strategy for cutting the deficit and the entitlement programs that drive it, obama played a poker game of incremental bargaining with house speaker john boehner. unfortunately, obama has been playing a waiting game on fiscal issues ever since he became president." to do, wind down the war in afghanistan, cut the pentagon budget in a way that protects our security, deal with iran, deal with the middle east. he's going to have a big job to do. he's an impressive guy, as mika said, he's got tons of support, as andrea said, but he does have detractors who he's going to have to win over even if they don't vote for him. >> he has sharp elbows. when i was on the hill, i didn't like the guy. i didn't. a lot of people didn't like the guy. i understand why john mccain wouldn't like a republican senator that endorsed a democrat. i understand. he doesn't play well with others in the sandbox. he certainly didn't when he was in the senate. i got to know him, though, through the years, and we got to know him. we like him. we respect him. he said some things about israel that caused me concerns. >> yeah. >> but he's going to be the president's secretary of defense. and i just wonder, what's better for democrats politically? if barack obama gets his republican secretary of defense or if republicans who, after deep sixing an african-american woman for secretary

announced the nomination of the former senator from your state to head the pentagon. let's take a listen. >> chuck hagel is the leader that our troops deserve. he is an american patriot. he enlisted in the army and volunteered for vietnam. to this day he bears the scars and shrapnel for battles he fought in our name. we see a decorated combat veteran of character and strength. they see one of their own. most importantly, chuck knows war is not an abstraction. he understands that sending young americans to fight and bleed in the dirt and mud, that's something we only do when it's absolutely necessary. >> well, senator hagel paid tribute to the men and women in uniform at the announcement today. let's listen to the nominee himself. >> mr. president, i am grateful for this opportunity to serve our country again and especially its men and women in uniform and their families. these are people that give so much to this nation every day with such dignity and selflessness. this is particularly important at a time as we complete our mission in afghanistan and support the troops and military famil

to lead the pentagon. there was a question of whether any republican would actually put a hold on the nomination. >> some said they will vote against it. >> yes, but putting a hold on it would be a very rare thing and the white house would not be about to nominate him if they didn't think he could actually make it through the senate. whatty we are learning is the white house hold senior members of congress to expect the nomination. >> you have serious questions. chuck hegel did endorse the president in 2008 and 2012. >> that are created consternation for john mccain who had been very, very close to chuck hegel in the senate as fellow republican. i think that they have a distance to go. not only with republicans by the way, but with democrats who really are feeling the heat from the pro israel hob lobby who would not support chuck hegel. not only is joe biden comfortable, but the president himself knows chuck hegel well and serves on the intelligence advisory board and it's clear they established a relationship. >> word that the headline out of what we were just talking about is

there are things in the pentagon you probably could deal with. i'm somebody who is a reaganite, i believe defense spending equates to capability. i don't want to shirk on weapon's capability or shirk on compensation for people putting their life on the line, but i have embraced what senator coburn wants to do, audit the pentagon. u.s. a very big bureaucracy. ask people who served on active duty in iraq, afghanistan, or on the home front. it's a big bureaucracy and a lot of times our military is successful in spite of the bureaucracy, but not because of it. i wouldn't say you can't look at defense, but if you think we'll balance the budget just by cutting defense, one, i don't think you can get there, but, two, we will be inviting danger from abroad, rather than protecting the people if we do that. >> you think we'll have a big fight over entitlements, social security, medicare? that will be coming up with the debt ceiling? part of the debt ceiling negotiations? >> i think we need to restructure some of the entitlements, get in the way that they are sustainable over the long term. whether it's via

operations in the world. that is according to a report by the pentagon. the report says iran's intelligence community has 30,000 people working for it, compared to just over 107 in the u.s. intelligence agencies and office. >> from the standpoint of u.s. western national security what is the most dangerous operation that iranian intelligence has its hand? >> well, i think the most dangerous thing is the terrorism. they have for decades now, developed networks with other terrorist groups, so they themselves don't necessarily have to do something. they can contract it out. they can encourage others to engage in terrorism against the united states and our allies. >> reporter: a former cia officer who tracked iranian intelligence through europe and the middle east says that iranian intelligence and security used to conduct most iranian-sponsored assassinations overseas. he says that unit killed ba kt iar, the former minister, assassinated in paris in 1991. but they say it has shifted to the iranian military unit part of the revolutionary guard. what is their big job now? >> they're primarily us

america's top commander in afghanistan, president obama's choice, chuck takal, to run the pentagon, president obama pulling out all troops by 2014, not leaving any military presence behind. that idea was floated at the white house earlier this week. we'll also talk to general stanley mcchrystal about that, also talk about his new memoir, my share of the task. but i wanted to begin by asking general mcchrystal about the weapons he used during his long career and whether civilians ought to be able to use weapons. you made headlines talking about gun control. what is your view when you see these military-style weapons in the hands of civilians? >> i spent a lifetime of carry weapons, and they fire a round at 3,000 feet per second. and when it hits human flesh it is devastating, designed to be that way. and that is what i want soldiers to carry. but i don't want those weapons around our schools, i don't want them on our streets. i think that if we can't -- it is not a complete fix to just address assault weapons. but i think if we don't get very serious now when we see children being b

months later, al awlaki is brought into the pentagon for a meeting as part of a muslim outreach program. not only do the documents show that he was buying tickets for the hijackers, it shows he was the central focus of the fbi's investigation of 9/11. >> in a statement a short time ago, the fbi cautioned against drawing conclusions about the documents saying there is no direct connection between al awlaki and 9/11. judicial watch is now asking the fbi to release a document in its entirety without redactions. for the sake of full transparency. >> thank you. >> you are welcome. al jazeera has taken a huge step to expand presence in the u.s. the challenge will be winning over an american audience. details on that next. plus, as the fighting rages on in syria, neighboring israel is taking steps to protect itself from extremist groups operating just across the border. >> this is the only thing protecting israel, a rusted barb wire fence. and now the new syrian border, 25 feet tall, steel reinforced and with raiser wire on top. >> the full report from israel's border with syria ahead on "the

, not strongly enough, but sees the need to do that. the pentagon is running 322 golf courses around this world on taxpayer dime. there's some bloat in there that doesn't get as much attention as social security and medicare. >> it does represent a threat to the direction of foreign policy. that's really what is behind this op zegs. >> i will end this segment, unfortunately. we have to end it here, but i will say this. i think you look at that tape of chuck hagel speaking in 2002 talking about his experience in vietnam. the president's words about being in the blood and the mud war are so important and to have someone who has seen combat and seen it in that way and still has shrapnel in his chest making decisions about what's going to happen to the men and women overseas should not be lost on the american puck. after the break congress has a few options for avoiding the next fiscal crisis. president obama can use an unconventional option to neutralize the fight. trillion dollar coins. >> we should have known a coin was obama's solution to everything. it was right there in his slogan. change. >>

for 9/11. i was coming in to washington, d.c. on 9/11. i saw the smoke pouring out of the pentagon. i have been to new york city. i have seen the 9/11 memorial. we won't forget those victims of terrorism. we can't forget the fact that al jazeera was the mouthpiece of osama bin laden and has been working hand in glove with terrorist groups ever since. >> and cliff, let me just ask you this. a lot of things about this obviously that troubles me. but one of them is the whole glenn beck business. a year ago, glenn offered to purchase this failing network, whatever it is, current tv, $250 million. that ain't nothing. gore wouldn't give him the time of day. a year later, gore sells it. okay he got 500 million bucks but he didn't know that when glenn beck first offered in. why is al gore going with anti-american, anti-christian, anti-jewish, anti-israeli, anti-everything operation instead of glenn beck? why? glenn beck is a good american. what is motivating gore? >> you have to try to get him on the show, but this is the equivalent during world war ii of turning over american broadcast facil

in the pentagon? >> well, a quick answer is i don't know. i think when you look at that d.o.d.colossus, 2.4 million men and women in the department of defense. it's a giant operation. on the other hand, larry, it's 4.7% of gnp. that's the lowest percentage of national treasure in any of our so-called country's wars. so i tell folks, you run an operation in iraq that was running $12 billion a month. afghanistan was $10 billion a month. we burneded up a lot of resources fight twog wars over the last decade. >> all right so just on that thought get some views from the panelists. we're running those wars down. will they stay down, general mccaffrey? i know some saving is already built in. but down the road in terms of support personnel, in terms of investment in various weaponry and approaches and so forth, maybe that's the place for the savings right there on top of the savings in europe. >> oh, i think there's no question that as we turn off this war in afghanistan i think we're going to largely leave. i'd be astonished if we have any significant footprint there much beyond 2014. so that's

fighters who attacked u.s. forces in afghanistan. a pentagon official describes him as someone who has a great deal of blood on his hands. >>> from deep inside caves in the taliban territory of afghanistan, a remarkable discovery. israel's national library has unveiled a collection of ancient hebrew manuscripts it just bought. it points to a thriving jewish community in the region about 1,000 years ago. the papers survived because the caves are so dry and so dark. >>> police in florida are asking for help in finding three criminals. they were caught on cameras this past monday as they held up a radioshack in pompano baemp. they fled out the back door and into a waiting getaway car. >> brazen. >>> and on a much lighter note, but also from florida, some anger over what some neighbors are calling an eye sore. >> this homeowner has graffitied his own house. it was his reaction after people in the neighborhood complained about the removal of some trees. now police say the graffiti might not look good, but it isn't a crime. >> the home owner plans on painting over the graffiti at some point,

are supportive of israel. i don't know what his management experience is regarding the pentagon. little, if any. so i think it's an incredibly controversial choice and it looks like the second term of barack obama will be an in-your-face term. >> so what are some of the issues? start with israel. as you heard, a number of his opponents, especially on the republican or conservative side think chuck hagel is not a friend of israel and point to his position on iran sanctions. they say because of his position that iran sanctions essentially aren't effective, that that is another point against him. also, from the liberal side, comments about a dozen, maybe 14 years ago, that chuck hagel made about a candidate for an ambassadorial position, where he called him openly and aggressively gay. now, chuck hagel has since apologized for that, but that also raises some haggles among some people on the more liberal side. not going to be a friendly reception up in the senate, however, the white house obviously thinks they can pull it off. >> an interesting confirmation hearing, that's for sure. >> let's talk a

a spending problem. we need to do something about spending. let's not target only the pentagon and hospitals and doctors, which is what the sequester targets, but let's make smarter spending cuts to affect everybody from all walks of life, including corporate world and therefore we can do something to give our children a better future with less debt on their shoulders. that's the smarter card for the republicans to play. >> let me switch to you, james, on the chuck hagel nomination to be the next defense secretary. there's been some quiet murmuring, some complaining among democrats, not unusual, i should say. you've heard it as well. why can't a democratic president ask a democrat to be defense secretary? they go back to the clinton administration when president clinton invited william cohen, a republican to be defense secretary. then the obama administration, president obama asked robert gates, a republican to be defense secretary. then there was leon panetta. and now another republican, chuck hagel. what's wrong with democrats being defense secretary? >> right. actually, just as an histori

on my show, colonel ellen herring, one of two women suing the pentagon for discrimination saying all the jobs should be open to everyone, men, women, the standards shouldn't be lowered, it should be one single standard. how can you help make that happen? >> well first of all, april makes ten years for me serving in the army national guard. we have women who have been serving in combat roles for a long time whether it has been under a combat title or not. if we look back to the civil war, we had women who were disguising themselves as men, so they could serve. we have in hawaii two brigades who have females who are serving in infantry units, and i think there is so much room for progress and we just need to make the connection from reality of the roles that women are already playing in our military and perception, where people don't have as close an understanding of the great contributions and sacrifices that women have been making for our country for a very long time. >> okay. >> that's what i'm excited about. i'm able to bring my own firsthand experience, my own deployments to the f

hagel is a decorated vietnam war vet. he would be succeeding leon panetta at the pentagon. again, nbc news confirming that chuck hagel will in fact get that nomination tomorrow from the president at white house. law enforcement on both sides of the aisle meanwhile have been saying that chuck hagel simply the wrong choice. >> frankly, chuck hagel is out of the mainstream of thinking i believe on most issues regarding foreign policy. i expect the president to nominate people than i would think. i'm going to vote for senator kerry. i don't agree with him a lot, but i think he's very much in the mainstream of thought. chuck hagel, if confirmed to be secretary of defense, would be the most antagonistic secretary of defense towards state of israel in our nation's history. >> with me now new york democratic congressman elliot engel, ranking member of the house foreign affairs committee as well. congressman, i'm guessing you don't probably agree with lindsey graham a whole lot, but you have also expressed some similar concerns about chuck hagel. what are they? >> let me say this. i think that

that? and i want to say a word about sequestration. sequestration is about to kick in. the pentagon and our defense department is like a giant oil tanker. you got to turn it around in a very difficult and slow manner, because they have to make plans and they have to have contingencies -- procurement of weapons, have to do all the things that are necessary to make sure our men and women who are serving in the military are the best trained, best equipped and most professional in the world, which they are. but we're looking at sequestration here when the department of defense says it will decimate our adilt -- ability to defend this nation. shouldn't the president of the united states be concerned about that? but what is his own secretary of defense is saying and what his own chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, his selection, is saying. instead, we kind of joke around and tell people they're going to be here fear new year's eve. that's not the way to lead this nation. so i come to the floor and say to my colleagues, we need to get this done. we all know that we need to get this done

plan submitted to the pentagon. now, the low-end option would leave about 6500 troops from afghanistan for counterterrorism operations. while the bigger option would leave 15,000 troops to help train afghan security forces. the plans are now waiting for official approval from the defense secretary. >>> it is 7:48. a new series of ads featuring the word "jihad" is getting a lot of attention. the ads are sponsored by the council on american islamic organizations. the organization says the word is misunderstood by most americans. people we talked with certainly had negative impressions of the word. >> a group of islamic people who are the bad guys. >> it means a -- it's killing people. >> the sponsors of the ad say gee maude actually means a struggle -- jihad actually means a struggle to be better. another definition says it's a holy war to defend or spread religious beliefs. >>> former arizona congresswoman gabrielle giffords will reportedly visit newtown, connecticut today. she's expected to meet with the families -- victims of last night's deadly shooting at sandy hook elementary. the

enlisted soldier to be named -- to head up the pentagon, i think it's a historic thing. i still think he gets through the senate if he is nominated even if there are some republicans who will oppose him. >> you think he'll get through, karen? >> i think he probably will. and, look, i think the politics on this are, particularly if it's republicans opposing a republican, i think outside of the beltway, that is less of a political problem for the president. i think ultimately, while i think some people are disappointed to see -- from a democratic administration where democrats have finally i think surpassed republicans on defense issues and national security issues to feel like we have to have a republican in that position. however, i think tactically for the white house having a republican in that position in a time of budget cuts is a very smart political move. >> okay. karen finney, johnny fratto, always good to have you on the show. >>> here's our twitter question of the day. it is -- what should be the top priority for the 113th congress? some of your tweets -- gop led house campaign

over it at the pentagon. listen, the president is allowed to nominate whomever he wants. however, the senate is also allowed to say yes or no. if the senate wants to castigate and say no to one of their own, they are certainly welcome to do that. but i don't care if a president -- and, listen, barack obama has had republican cabinet members. george bush had democratic cabinet members. i like bipartisanship. i would like to see more of it. i think we need more diversity in the next cabinet, and so far what we're seeing is a lot of white men, but the president is allowed to pick whom he chooses, and if he chooses a former republican senator to be his next secretary of defense, the senate ought to have a hearing, investigate it, and give it an up or down vote, period. >> chip, in terms of the bipartisan appeal, do you think that is a significant factor here? do you think by doing this the president tries to rise above the rancor that exists on capitol hill? >> trying to do bipartisan support by nominating a former republican senator who balked his own party and backed the democratic
